The GUMSHOE study is the definitive meteorological and oceanographic database for design of offshore structures in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico. This JIP (Joint Industry Project) hindcast a population of 100 historical hurricanes to produce time histories of surface wind speed, two dimensional wave spectrum, storm surge and vertically averaged current on a 12 Nmi grid covering the entire Gulf of Mexico.

A follow-on study, GUMSHOE2, follows the same methodology as GUMSHOE but is available on a higher-resolution grid in the Mississippi Delta.

Joining the GUMSHOE JIP provides the operator with access to the full GUMSHOE database at all 1443 archived grid points. Return period extremes (both site specific and site-averaged) have been analyzed between 10 and 200 years for significant wave height, maximum individual wave height, maximum crest height, wind speed, storm surge height and depth-averaged current speed. Also provided are correlations between peak spectral wave period, wind speed, current component in-line with the wave direction, and peak significant wave height. A full report describing the GUMSHOE methodology and copies of all output statistics are included as well.
